March Against Death Alley

NEW MARCH DATES: Thurs, May 30 - Mon, June 3
Rain dates: Thurs, June 6 - Mon, June 10

----------------------------------------------------------------

Death Alley, widely and historically known as Cancer Alley, is the area between and including Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Louisiana. More than 200 petrochemical industries contribute to genocide here in what is known as a “national zone of sacrifice”.

The production and wastes from these state-supported industries are life threatening, emitting hundreds of known cancer-causing chemicals that are also known to cause birth defects, cardiovascular complications, autoimmune disorders and respiratory diseases. Children, developing fetuses, and the elderly are the most vulnerable to adverse health effects, yet everyone is susceptible, as evidenced by the sheer numbers of deaths in these mostly black communities.

This march is a beginning of a movement to bring environmental justice, to free the land and liberate the people!

We will march from Reserve to Baton Rouge, following the river at every turn. Buses and cars will be available. Meals/snacks, water, and lodging will be provided.

If you plan to join us for any or all of the march days, please RSVP here so that we know how many people to accommodate: bit.ly/cada5day.

Bring comfortable shoes and a refillable water bottle.

We will host press conferences each day and mass meetings each evening.

Each evening we will designate and light candles to honor and remember the victims of Death Alley, as well as to visually depict the numbers of our loved ones whose lives were taken, and who march with us in spirit.

Please bring small pictures of your loved ones who have died from diseases caused by proximity to industrial pollution, as we will be designating and labeling candles with names, cause of death, proximity to industrial plants, prayers, and pictures.

Each day as more people join the march, the candle lighting ceremony will grow as more candles are added. The final candle-lighting ceremony will be held outside the capitol.

More details TBA soon.

-----
This march is also a small part of the growing movement to save the world from mining and use of fossil fuels. Credible scientists say we have 12 years to radically curb use of fossil fuels or the Earth as we know it will have undergone a tipping point where life will be unsustainable.
